  1. Outstanding Product

I’ve owned the Wissota 911 Skate Sharpener since 2001. My son who was still playing hockey in college wanted to try the new Flat Bottom V sharpening instead of his normal radius of hollow. I purchased the Wissota Universal Wheel Dresser in 2013 and bought Flat Bottom V spinners from another manufacturer. The Wissota dresser works great, has simple height adjustment capability and is very easy to use. It has a magnetic base that is extremely strong and holds the dresser stationary while dressing the grinding wheel. A good investment for those that want to try spinner type wheel dressers.

I’ve owned the universal dresser for over 5 years and use it extensively. For most of my sharpening I’m using the regular ROH on my 911, and for myself and two other people I’m using the universal dresser with a dressing wheel from another manufacturer. I will leave it to other blogs to discuss the merits, pros and cons of the various ROH and FBV or FIRE. Although I extensively sharpen with both and skate on both and personally prefer one I’m not convinced there really is that much difference besides what’s between my ears. I’ve found that it is easiest to have three pink wheels, and when changing from FBV to either of the two ROH I commonly cut I change the wheel out and it makes dressing the wheel quicker. There is a definite difference in the way the FBV wheels dress the pink wheel, and there seems to be less material removed from the pink wheel to dress it with the FBV wheel. I’m meticulous about dressing the wheel and do it between skates and if I do over 4 passes. I’ve been thru three FBV wheels, and a gross estimate is I can dress over a hundred times (a hundred sharpenings) before having to change the FBV diamond out. This is important because the FBV wheels have been progressively increasing in cost, and are now over $100 by the time you get it shipped to your house. Sharpening an FBV does take a bit more attention to dressing the wheel, but the actual sharpening of a skate is very similar to a regular ROH sharpening. If this makes any sense As a sharpener I enjoy the feel of sharpening the standard ROH more than the less satisfying FBV, but as a skater I enjoy the feel of the FBV. Having said that, as an experiment I intentionally sharpened one of my skates with a FBV (I’m using 95/1) and the other skate with a similar ROH (I used a 7/16 radius) and I was hard pressed to tell the difference. If the FBV vs ROH thing seems a bit nonsensical from the above discussion I won’t disagree- it’s art and science and voodoo. The really nice thing about the 911 and the universal dresser is it gives you the flexibility to try all these options out for yourself and those you sharpen for more conveniently than any other machine I’ve seen out there.

I purchased this dresser for my skate sharpening business and am thrilled with the ease to use. I purchased five spinners and can now offer FBV sharpening while using my current sharpener. The investment pays off tenfold when you can offer more versatility with your skate sharpening.
